West Elgin is a great place to start a business. The 401 runs through the municipality which provides direct access to Windsor and Detroit (to the west) and the GTA (to the east). It is also a 35 minute drive to Chatham and London and a 40 minute drive to St. Thomas.

West Elgin is a rural community with two former villages, Rodney and West Lorne, several hamlets and a lakeshore development area. Agricultural businesses include cash crop, raising livestock and specialty items.

Port Glasgow has a vibrant marina with beach area.
