Port Glasgow Dance Hall
The Port Glasgow Dance Hall was built by the Aldborough Old Boys in 1921. The first dance was held Wednesday August 3, 1921 with music supplied by a local group. This first dance held was a "Jitney Dance", where dancer
s paid 5 cents per dance, with the floor being cleared after each number.
This dance hall is the oldest dance hall in continuous use along the shores of the Great Lakes. This dance hall recently celebrated its 101st Anniversary with a ceremony, dance and presentation of its history. The slide show was created by the Elgin County Archives and can be viewed here.
Port Glasgow Memorial Park
The Park is located at 8650 Furnival Road in Port Glasgow.
The former Soldiers' and Pioneers' Memorial Park was opened in 1920 and was, for many years, the scene of an annual reunion of residents of what was the Township of Aldborough. The site was near the landing point of the earliest of the settlers to the area and was called Cnoc Nealliadh (Gaelic for Nelly's Hill) by highlanders who arrived here first starting in 1818. Today, the entrance to the former park is marked by the original gates and a cairn as well as two mill stones that survived from the first mill built by Colonel Talbot in 1805 and was burned by the Americans in the War of 1812.
